Night Beach (lo-fi tape)

This tape was crazy!

I was still kind of on the borderline of madness when processing this tape. I began working on it in 2015, while I was also making music for The Master Baggs EP. I was producing my own tracks, and since I had submitted The Basement to Adam, was kind of left to my own devices to work on the next project.

I was writing some cool raps while at SC. I would carry around this miniature notebook, and whenever inspiration sparked I would embark upon the journey of the pen. We made a video for Quest in 2018, while I was out back in LA for a trip.

The tape eventually came out December 31, 2017. I was kind of in peak stages of madness at this time. My cousin Johnny helped me look over the final package, and I wish I listened to his advice more because I’ll let you guys in on a little secret…

THIS was my first time mixing my own music. Because of that I bascially had NO idea what I was doing! it was quiet AF! But as I continued to mix and mix and mix it down, I knew the songs so I was familiar with them, but I realized upon its release that no one else could hear it!

This time period for me felt kind of like I had a veil over my eyes and face, as if everything was kind of a blur. Partially due to mental health reasons… but that’s another story.

the cover art was made by the fabulous Kell Yang-Sammataro. He used photoshop to edit a picture my cousin Johnny (a.k.a. Snowy Wilderness) took of me around the time of its release. I thought he snapped! I’ll include some of the photos from this shoot in this post.

the entirity of the project was produced by me as well.

The title of the tape comes from when my friend Jack Anderson was visiting me in Los Angeles. He was in town for the Penn State USC Rosebowl game (he pitched baseball at Penn State). The only thing is, I was kind of on my year of rest and relaxation tip (lol) so we didn’t do much except watch old movies. He had never seen The Matrix before (???)

The title came to me on the one night we did get out of the house and traveled over to Venice beach / Santa Monica. something about that night was so magical. just walking along the beach with my good friend whom i hadn’t seen in a while. myself in a state of stupor due to mental illness. his probable confusion about my behavior… it just set up this kind of awkward but beautiful dance between the two of us that i’ll always remember.

was i actually crazy?
